Baby Elephant at Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. The heavyweights of Africa are capable of remarkable gentleness when shepherding their young... Though the babies themselves are not as petite as they may first appear, with new borns weighing in excess of 100kg.
Cheetah with her Six Cubs. A Cheetah rests briefly with her cubs on the Masai Mara in southern Kenya. This remarkable mother had raised these six cubs to the age of 3 months old; an age up to 90% of Cheetah cubs never reach due to predation from Lions and Hyenas. Young cubs are even in danger from the skies, with Eagles also being a threat.

Chimpanzee, Chester Zoo. The Chimpanzee enclosure at Loro Parque in Tenerife is a veritable soap opera. Chimps have a complex social structure, and while I'm conflicted about seeing these animals in captivity, it does provide an opportunity to witness this close up.

Elephant Convoy, Serengeti. Elephants travelling in convoy across the Serengeti plains of Northern Tanzania.
Elephants and Calf, Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. Standing up to 4m tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 6 tonnes, Elephants are the heavyweights of Africa. They are remarkably intelligent animals, and have a complex and matriarchal society.

Lioness, Masai Mara (1 of 2). In no big cat is the close relationship with the domestic cat better demonstrated in my opinion. Like the domestic cat, the Lion is reknowned for it's sleeping habits, and will typically sleep some 15 hours a day, hunting mostly at night.
Lion, Serengeti Plains, Tanzania (5 of 8). It is the Lioness, rather than the larger male that performs the vast majority of hunting for the 10-15lbs of meat they consume daily. They typically hunt in groups, and at night, making them formidable predators.

Lion Hunt on the Masai Mara (1 of 5). Lions, lacking the speed to catch some of their faster prey, must rely on ambush and stealth to catch a meal. In contrast to the domestic cat, the kill itself is remarkably humane; the Lion clamping it's jaws around the throat of the animal and quickly suffocating it.

Tiger, Loro Parque. As anyone who has visited a Tiger enclosure knows, you have to get up early in the morning to find these beautiful animals awake. This Tigress at Loro Parque is cooling off after a nap in the sun... Five minutes later she was dozing in the shade again.
