Ballycarberry Castle, Ireland. Ireland seems to have more than it's fair share of atmospheric and historic castles. Ballycarberry is certainly amongst my favorites; with its tumbling towers and overgrown ivy, it certainly leaves a lasting impression on visitors
Dunbar Castle, East Lothian. There really isn't much left of Dunbar Castle nowadays, with a single section of wall still standing above the entrance to the harbour.
Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland (1 of 6). The ruined castle of Dunstanburgh, is for me one of the most atmospheric sites of the Northumberland coast. Dunstanburgh Castle is indeed as one 1550 source put it, in a state of "wonderfull great decaye."

Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie, Scotland (1 of 8). Eilean Donan is reputedly the most photographed castle in Scotland, and from first glance it is easy to see why. Surrounded on all sides by the waters of Loch Alsh and Loch Duich, as well as the towering mountains of Skye it really is a stunning location.
